West Virginia "kayaking"
West Virginia paddling during the week of October 12, 2008
I did some paddling on Cheat Lake on October 12 2008.
It was a beautiful warm day but there is no good access to this lake. It is mostly private property.
I am not aware of any state access.
There were also too many motor boats to allow a really pleasant paddle.
On October 13 I did North Bend Lake. This was a much nicer place to paddle.
I don’t know if there are 2 or 3 public accesses but the one I put in at was good.
One motor boat went by me. There are lots of dead trees.
It was a nice trip.
On October 14 I went to Ohiopyle. That was quite a site looking at the falls there.
They say there are occasional days where people go over the falls. Not me!!
I asked about doing a trip on the Middle Yough but there were no trips going.
They seemed to be pretty much closing down for the winter.
I guess it gets too cold for other people before it gets too cold for me. I went up to the lake.
I thought that would be no problem but it was almost empty and really looked ugly
so I didn’t do any paddling today.
On October 15 I went to Tygart Lake. It had been drained also and looked ugly.
I decided to try Valley Falls State Park.
That was nice but unfortunately a quarter mile walk to the lake.
I could not take my boat that far to put in. There were some scenic falls there also.
I went to Bull Run and down a long rough road along the edge of a cliff.
If I had known how bad the road was I would not have gone there.
I eventually got to a bridge across the Cheat River.
It was a rusty old bridge with a wooden deck.
It was about 80 feet down to the water and the bridge did not look like it could hold
the 3 tons the sign said was the limit.
I would have had to drive across the bridge to get to where I could put my boat in and paddle around some.
I some guy came down in a 4 wheeler. I asked him how the road was going out the other way.
He said it was much worse than the way I came in so I just took some pictures and went back the way I came.
No kayaking today even though it was such a beautiful warm day.
I think the bridge it called Jenkinsburg Bridge.
October 16 2008.
Kayak destroyed! No more Tarpon 120!
